The Dutch impressionist Isaac Israels travelled regularly to Paris. This book tells the story of the influence of the city of light on his work and his friendships with artists and writers in Paris.

The extensive oeuvre of Isaac Israels (1865-1934) is characterised by lively beach and cityscapes, portraits of famous actresses and writers, fairground and circus scenes, scenes with fashionable ladies in the latest fashion and café interiors with dancing couples. During the Belle Epoque, Israels brought impressionism to the Netherlands with light, colour and movement.
During his life he made several foreign trips. He visited Paris several times and for longer periods. He even rented a studio there, submitted work to the Salons and also exhibited at the Paris art dealers. In this book you can read about the wonder he felt for the city where the subjects were there for the taking. Montmartre with its many cafés, dance halls and theatres, the Rue de la Paix and its surroundings with its famous fashion studios and further on the Bois de Boulogne. A city where Isaac Israels developed into the famous painter he still is today.
You can also read about his wanderings through the city with the Dutch literary figure Frans Erens. Their encounters with artists and writers in Paris. Such as Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen, Berthe Morisot and Odilon Redon for whom he became a great advocate in the Netherlands.

The book contains a number of walks in the footsteps of Isaac Israels through Paris. IN DUTCH!
