For the first time in history, the Van Gogh Museum and the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam are joining forces for a special exhibition about Anselm Kiefer (°1945), one of the most important artists of our time. The exhibition and the catalogue are based on Vincent van Gogh’s lasting influence on Kiefer and Kiefer’s long-standing ties with the Netherlands, and in particular with the Stedelijk Museum.
The title of the exhibition and the book is derived from the powerful anti-war song by American folk singer and activist Pete Seeger: Where Have All the Flowers Gone. This song later became widely known in German, English and French translations by Marlene Dietrich. It is also the title of a large spatial work that Kiefer is creating especially for this exhibition and also refers to Vincent van Gogh’s Sunflowers.
The renowned British historian Simon Schama wrote the main essay, in which he argues for Kiefer’s unparalleled importance in art history. Schama travelled especially for this purpose to Kiefer’s studio in Croissy for an extensive conversation with the artist. Art historian Antje von Graevenitz addresses, among other things, the question of how Kiefer’s work was received in the Netherlands. Anselm Kiefer himself explains in the catalogue where his fascination for the work of Vincent van Gogh comes from. Stedelijk researcher Tamara Klopper adds an overview of the most important moments in Kiefer’s life and career. IN DUTCH!
