Richly illustrated book, published on the occasion of Oorebeek’s major retrospective at WIELS, presents rereadings of fifty years of work and the materiality of production.
OBSTAKLES, by no means complete or comprehensive, contains approximately one hundred and twenty descriptions: rereadings of fifty years of work by Willem Oorebeek (b. 1953 in Rotterdam and living and working in Brussels since 1984). They are numbered according to memory, arranged under headings and translated from Dutch to English. The translations are coloured by two years of conversation with editor and designer Will Holder — taking into account ambiguity, errors, and a [un]conscious preference for “quasi-”, “although…”, ”and so on”. Repetition, alliteration and other material, musical and metrical devices [“every election perpetuates this sincerely fragile momentum”] are deliberately placed on the page, designed for memory and remembrance.
