Jean Brusselmans (1884–1953) is one of the most distinctive Belgian painters. His art, situated at the intersection of tradition and modernity, seeks to organize the chaotic reality of everyday life into clear, well-considered compositions. Balancing between figuration and abstraction, Brusselmans tirelessly pursues the essence of things. In doing so, he develops a unique visual language that defies categorization within any specific artistic movement, giving reality a new and surprisingly modern form.
This book presents a comprehensive overview of his career—spanning from the First World War to the early 1950s—through 120 works, including paintings, drawings, and prints drawn from major Belgian museum collections and private holdings. It also places his work in dialogue with that of several contemporaries, such as Gustave De Smet, James Ensor, Fernand Léger, Piet Mondrian, Giorgio Morandi, Constant Permeke, and Rik Wouters. In this way, the book sheds new light on Brusselmans’ position within the key art movements of the early twentieth century.
Featuring an introduction by exhibition curator Ann Geeraerts, essays by Kurt De Boodt, Eric Min, and Francisca Vandepitte, and an interview with contemporary artist Kristof Santy. IN DUTCH, AVAILABLE IN FRENCH UPON REQUEST!
