  • The design principles of architect Dom Hans van der Laan unraveled
    – The ideas of the ‘s-Hertogenbosch School applied to complex design challenges of the future
    – With insights and tools for contemporary architectural practice

In this basic handbook, architect Caroline Voet unravels the design principles of the Dutch Benedictine monk and architect Dom Hans van der Laan (1904-1991), offering insights and tools for contemporary architectural practice. Voet gradually reimagines Van der Laan’s philosophy of Architectural Space, linked to his ratio system of The Plastic Number 3:4, in a series of comprehensible analyses. The principles underlying Van der Laan’s elementary architecture and some strong interpretations by his ‘s-Hertogenbosch School’ students are analyzed as practical examples. Voet demonstrates that these principles are based on design traditions from Vitruvius to the Renaissance, with Van der Laan’s specific approach striving for a modern and dynamic spatial effect. This book offers new insights to validate the spatial experiments of Architectonic Space and apply them to the complex design challenges of the future.

Caroline Voet is a professor at the Faculty of Architecture at KU Leuven, where she wrote her doctoral thesis on spatial systems in the work of Dom Hans van der Laan. THIS VERSION IS IN DUTCH, BUT ALSO AVAILABLE IN ENGLISH, SEE OUR WEBSHOP
