American photographer Joel-Peter Witkin (b. 1939) has been developing a unique and disturbing body of work. Disturbing in the inner world it reveals, at once tormented, strange, and inhabited by the certainty of a real presence of the divine. While he situates himself as close as possible to humanity by choosing his subjects from marginal environments or those with extreme practices (transsexuals, sadomasochists, the mentally ill, the physically handicapped), he transcends the anecdotal and the spectacular: the glory and misery of the flesh manifest in his photographs a metaphysical and philosophical, even mystical, anxiety that is rooted in Witkin’s immense artistic culture. This was a great opportunity to highlight this constant circulation of themes, by giving a glimpse of the richness and diversity of the print collection of the Bibliothèque nationale de France through some fifty precious engravings, in an unprecedented and fruitful dialogue with the work of the photographer: Dürer, Rembrandt, Goya, Rops, Picasso, Ensor… This confluence of claimed influences and the work of photography as collage, as palimpsest (with its scrapings, tears, abrasions of the negative, the affixing of filters and various obstacles between the support and the enlarger) gives birth to a work that is in the great lineage of Sade, Bataille and also of Christian mystics.
