Belgian photographer Dirk Braeckman (b. 1958) took these photographs in the notorious Pyramid Club, in the East Village of Manhattan, New York City. In those days (late eighties, early nineties) friends invited him to places where things “happened”, where there was a gathering of people that could be interesting to photograph. With a six by six camera and a flash Braeckman made these portraits of the partygoers, Liza Minnelli lookalikes, dragqueens and post-punks. The images of this shoot were never printed let alone exhibited. However it’s not so hard to recognize – in the backgrounds and details of these images – elements that form the core of Braeckman’s later work.
