Monnikenheide in Zoersel is a residential care center for people with an intellectual disability. A special place for special people, which is viewed from an architectural perspective for the first time in this book.

The right to own territoriality for people with an intellectual disability, that is the ambition of Monnikenheide, a domain in Zoersel with family replacement facilities. Since its foundation in 1973, initiator Wivina Demeester has been integrating high-quality architecture in Monnikenheide, with homes designed by renowned designers and agencies such as b0b Van Reeth, Maarten Van Severen, Bovenbouw Architectuur, 51N4E…
Monnikenheide is synonymous with pioneering: in healthcare, in living, in creating a home for all residents, in creating a warm nest and innovative, high-quality healthcare architecture. “Because living in good architecture,” says Wivina Demeester, “makes residents and staff more beautiful and happier.” Stimulated by the policy, the new forms of care and housing in which Monnikenheide pioneered seeped everywhere. Half a century later, it is buzzing with small-scale initiatives and the legislation with the person-following budget has changed to such an extent that innovation remains absolutely necessary to reinvent care for people with disabilities.

In the fifty-year building history of Monnikenheide, different architects have been looking for spatial possibilities within the leitmotif of inclusion. This created a unique landscape that transcends the boundaries of healthcare architecture. Monnikenheide is a powerful architectural statement about the place of people in need of care in our society. IN DUTCH, ENGLISH version on demand.
