At first glance, the roaring twenties seem far away in the Belgian countryside. But if you listen carefully, you will hear modern jazz blaring over the river Leie. Attracted by its rural and pure character, many painters and writers settled in the Leie region in the 1920s, including Ghent artist friends Gustave De Smet and Frits Van den Berghe. They are among the most important painters of what is called ‘Flemish expressionism’ and bring modern figurative painting in Belgium to a pinnacle.

This book focuses on the colorful and often mischievous character of the Flemish Expressionists. It contains a unique overview of Belgian art during the interwar period, with, in addition to paintings by Gustave De Smet and Frits Van den Berghe, also works by artists such as Jozef Cantré, Hubert Malfait, Constant Permeke, Edgard Tytgat and Gustave Van de Woestyne. Their individual oeuvres are idiosyncratic, but also show coherence in style and vision. Paintings as wonderful memories: short, cheerful stories with invariably a touch of melancholy.
