Vivian Maier (1926-2009) est connue comme photographe. Il aura fallu le hasard de la découverte de son corpus photographique en 2007 dans une brocante aux Etats-Unis pour que le public puisse la connaître. Vivian Maier naît à New-York en 1926. Son père est d’origine austro-hongroise et sa mère est française, ce qui la conduit à séjourner à plusieurs reprises en France dans sa jeunesse. Elle commence à exercer le métier de gouvernante d’enfants dès 1951, d’abord à New-York puis, jusque dans les années 1990 à Chicago où elle s’éteint au printemps 2009.Cette passion qui l’habite et qui deviendra une activité presque quotidienne, l’élève aujourd’hui au rang des plus grands photographes emblématiques de la Street Photography, et la fait figurer dans l’histoire de la photographie aux côtés de Diane Arbus, Robert Frank, Helen Levitt ou Garry Winogrand.Son oeuvre est constituée de plus de 120 000 images photographiques, de films super 8 et 16 mm, d’enregistrements divers, de photographies éparses, et d’une multitude de pellicules non développées, comme autant de trouvailles fascinantes.

ENGLISH:  Vivian Maier (1926-2009) is known as a photographer. It was only by chance that her body of work was discovered in 2007 at a flea market in the United States that she became known to the public. Vivian Maier was born in New York in 1926. Her father was of Austro-Hungarian origin and her mother was French, which led her to spend several periods in France in her youth. She began working as a governess in 1951, first in New York and then, until the 1990s, in Chicago where she died in the spring of 2009.This passion, which became an almost daily activity, has made her one of the most emblematic photographers of Street Photography, and places her in the history of photography alongside Diane Arbus, Robert Frank, Helen Levitt and Garry Winogrand.Her work consists of more than 120,000 photographic images, super 8 and 16 mm films, various recordings, scattered photographs, and a multitude of undeveloped films, like so many fascinating finds.
