In this artist’s book, Belgian artist Steven Baelen (b. 1981) opens up a visual practice—one fueled for over twenty years by attentiveness, repetition, and observation—to the reader. From the intimacy of home and studio, he draws rooms, objects, walls, and memories—again and again—in a continuous attempt to grasp what is unfolding before his eyes.
Drawing, painting, and digital reconstruction merge into a web of images in which original and copy, reality and imagination, proximity and distance lose their fixed meanings. Each line becomes a trace of looking; each repetition, a new approach to the same elusive drawing.
This book brings together drawings, texts, and reflections in a personal and poetic exploration of the space between appearing and disappearing. It is an invitation to look closely at what often goes unnoticed. IN DUTCH!
