From its inception in the early 19th century to the mid-20th century, the train has captivated many artists. Artworks illustrated the fear and enthusiasm for a new, industrial world that was reaching cruising speed, but also had many dark sides. Artists showed stations and the influence of the railway on the urban fabric, or showed new places that testified to the – also new – possibility to travel. They were fascinated by the lights and wisps of smoke from the locomotives, by the speed and omnipotence of the machine. In their works they emphasized the plastic beauty of the curves of often impressive trains, of the pistons and the wonderful mechanism. They showed the machine and the fantasy, with their feet on the ground or with their heads in the dream world of travel and adventure.
