In “82c9940_the art of living twice,” Belgian architect and photographer Simen Lambrecht (born 1993) explores the memory of his deceased grandmother, Cecile, and her life in the Meetjesland region.
Memories fade quickly, becoming increasingly intertwined with childish fantasies and rural Flemish stereotypes. Based on a series of letters from his grandmother, the photographs explore memory as an imperfect testimony and a poetic construction—ephemeral, subjective, and often imbued with nostalgia.

Rereading the letters my grandmother had sent me before her cancer diagnosis, the landscape I had escaped as a teenager was redrawn. The silence of the fields and the winding paths between them had never really captivated me. Nor had the traditions, rituals, and customs. Until she died. This project is about the memory of her, my grandmother, who lived in the same village for 82 years, and about our bond. It’s about breaking through my own preconceptions by reappraising the connection between her, her surroundings, her friends, and the everyday.
