behind the front lines. In June 1917, the British poet and composer Ivor Gurney (1890-1937) stayed there with his regiment. During his nighttime walks, he composed music and wrote poetry. More than a hundred years later, Reniere&Depla live, work, and walk, as if by chance, in that same village. They, too, regularly venture into the fields at night. The soldier and the painters seem to cross paths there—in the rhythm of the night, in a place that has stood the test of time.
A publication of the same name was published to accompany the installation at the Flanders Fields Museum. This richly illustrated publication offers insight into the working process of Belgian artists Reniere&Depla, artists-in-residence 2025, and places their work in dialogue with the landscape, history, and the figure of war poet Ivor Gurney.
