This book proposes a practical theory to map urban experiential knowledge in neighborhoods that are usually referred to as disadvantaged. The knowledge stored in urban experiences is not simply available, not even to those involved themselves. The narratives used to talk about these neighborhoods are available: ‘underprivileged’, ‘poor’, ‘non-integrated’. These narratives undermine experiential knowledge. After all, other people’s words are stronger; invested with more power. They keep the speaking of experience invisible, unseen.

The practical theory that Blondeel proposes reverses these relationships. Researchers and practitioners can map the wisdom with which these local residents maintain their environment on a daily basis. They can make visible the care and contribution that these people have been providing for years and years, but which remains unseen, including for themselves. The practical theory formulates some new working principles. How can we better connect with the care already available, with these daily practices and competencies? How do local residents become full participants in such research? How do we create public forums in which this experiential knowledge (re)becomes political? IN DUTCH!
