A journey through time in words and images through the through-house. With personal conversations with residents and Gerrit de Jager, the illustrator of the well-known comic strip The Doorzon Family. Since the reconstruction, the Netherlands (and Belgium) have had streets full of terraced houses, single-family homes, or rather through-houses, as we like to call them. At least a million in total, with a life and a story of its own behind each facade. Yet the bigger story about the through-house has not been told in detail before. Ode to the through-house provides a broad insight into the house, garden and kitchen of the past decades. With attention to the origin of the house type in the reconstruction period, new lifestyles, renovations in the seventies and later (dormer windows, sliding doors, sitting pit), the design of the garden (terraces, ponds and fences) – and about the changing life in the neighborhood and of neighbors. While the through-house was the pinnacle of modernity in the fifties, shortly after its creation it already struggled with an image problem. Why actually? What’s wrong with a house that’s the same as your neighbours’? The residents themselves also have their say about their living pleasure and worries. IN DUTCH!
