Disparue au mois de mars 2012, Françoise de Staël, la veuve du peintre, laissait en cours un travail immense. Elle avait en effet rassemblé et classé, durant des années, l’œuvre graphique du peintre, afin de constituer le Catalogue raisonné des dessins. Cet aspect de l’œuvre était resté jusqu’ici confidentiel, rarement montré au public, sauf à l’occasion de quelques publications et d’expositions. Ce catalogue raisonné des dessins va nous permettre pour la première fois d’approfondir notre connaissance du travail de l’artiste et d’avoir un regard exhaustif sur sa production graphique.

Françoise de Staël (+2012), the painter’s widow, left an immense work in progress. She had indeed collected and classified, for years, the graphic work of the painter, in order to constitute the Catalog raisonné of the drawings. This aspect of the work had hitherto remained confidential, rarely shown to the public, except on the occasion of a few publications and exhibitions. This catalog raisonné of the drawings will allow us for the first time to deepen our knowledge of the artist’s work and to have an exhaustive look at his graphic production.
Nicolas de Staël saw the drawing as a work in itself, but also as preparatory work for the development of a painting. We follow through this book the biographical thread of Staël and visit the places that marked his vision.
The wealth of tools, techniques such as graphite, charcoal, felt-tip pen, engraving, India ink, lithography or even glued paper, reveals the extent of the painter’s research. The evolution of the drawing through the ten years of its production takes it from abstraction to figuration, from a composition entangled in lines to a refined thread that innervates the space.
This catalog will allow fans of Nicolas de Staël to better understand what underlies the entire work of the painter.
