As one of the most prominent post-war landscape architects, Nico de Jonge (1920-1997) stood at the basis of the emancipation of the field. Under his leadership, the landscape architecture department of Staatsbosbeheer increasingly developed a design-oriented approach. Visionary plans saw the light in wonderful chalk drawings. As a professor at the Agricultural University of Wageningen, his excursions to the new landscapes made an indelible impression.
The Dutch delta area was his domain. Born and raised in Zeeland, he declared to everyone his love for the dynamic coastal landscape. There, on the border between land and water, was the inspiration for the cultural landscape he advocated. Where people and nature could develop in contrasting landscapes.
Yvonne Horsten-van Santen sketches the context in which De Jonge mastered the profession in ‘Listening Cultural Landscape’. And she discusses a large number of his projects: from the redevelopment of Walcheren to the designs for the Flevopolders. Jeroen Bosch photographed what became of those designs. Rich landscapes, impressive and vital. IN DUTCH!
