Over the last decades, Martin Assig (b. 1959), has produced a compelling painterly oeuvre that is presented in a major first-time retrospective exhibition. Martin Assig is primarly working in the rare technique of encaustic used by ancient Egyptians and Pop Art icons like Jasper Johns. His multi-layered body of work has its own iconography, its own colouring and this very special painting technique. His often large-format compositions made of pigmented wax are influenced by the traditions of religious folk art on the one hand, and an inventive play with words translated into haunting images on the other hand.
This book accompanies the retrospective exhibition at the Museum Küppersmühle, Duisburg (November 2022-March 2023)
