From 2015 to 2019, Marjolein van Eig wrote the column ‘Het Detail’ for the trade journal de Architect. In over 30 columns, she examines and describes details related to architecture. She relates them to daily actions, experiences and memories and connects them to contemporary themes. Everything passes by: from comic strip-like architecture in Rotterdam to the smell of door handles and the sauna look of timber construction. Counters, a detail that we see unconsciously every day, are examined. Just like the door that connects and excludes at the same time. And what is preferable: a flat or a sloping roof?
Her texts are bundled in this publication. The essays by Mark Pimlott and Violette Schönberger and the afterword by Hans van der Heijden offer the reader a framework. They place ‘the detail’ in a scientific, historical and future perspective.
Each chapter is enriched with an iconic drawing. The colourful design encourages the reader to regularly read about one or more details. IN DUTCH!
