Élise and Djo Bourgeois form a couple of Parisian artists engaged in an aesthetic avant-garde that combines simplicity, charm and lightness. They have, with rigor and consistency, placed their work within an era which aimed to revolutionize the art of living. They get to the point without ever being austere or boring. Their shops and interiors are fresh, bright, cheerful, not to mention considerably ahead of their time.

Colorist, Élise (1894-1986) created, from 1926, printed canvases and rugs with flat geometric figures. It combines minimalism and optical effects. Its fabrics are integrated into Djo’s designs and distributed in the Netherlands by the Metz & Co stores and in France by the Maurice and Jean Lauer establishments. They have just been reissued by Maison Pierre Frey.

Architect-decorator, Djo (1898-1937) revealed, from 1922, the facets of his talent at the Salons d’Automne and des Artistes decorateurs where he collaborated with the greatest creators: Sonia and Robert Delaunay, Gerda Wegener, Jan and Joël Martel, Léon Leyritz, Thérèse Bonney… He directs Le Studium, the art workshop of the Louvre stores and, like his friend Rob Mallet-Stevens, he creates film and theater sets. From 1926, he established himself as an architect-decorator designing interiors for the Noailles, the lawyers Maurice Paz and Robert Lange, Jean-Maurice Lahy, the Schwob de Lure and d’Héricourt, the Duke and Duchess of Harcourt. , the Countess of Karolyi, Nathalie Sarraute, the art dealer Armand Drouant… Her ensembles, her indoor bars and her metal furniture are of an unprecedented freshness and have not aged a bit.
