Léon Spilliaert (1881-1946) was a self-taught artist who was shaped by contact with the literature of his time and who was convinced of his vocation as a chosen artist, in which he is reminiscent of Nietzsche. He was the creator of a particularly original oeuvre inspired by metaphysical questions and Flemish culture, and made almost exclusively on paper. In a mix of graphic techniques such as India ink, pencil, black chalk, pastel, colored pencils and also watercolor and gouache, the Ostend native forged links with the symbolism and expressionism of his time and in his most radical, extremely simplified landscapes he seemed to geometric abstraction and minimalism.

Anne Adriaens-Pannier is a worldwide Spilliaert expert and has already published countless publications on the Ostend artist. She also curates the expo in Lausanne. IN DUTCH!
