As a model, muse, photographer, war reporter and surrealist chef, Lee Miller (1907-1977) lived many lives. It is known that she was ‘discovered’ on the street at the age of nineteen and that her face appeared on the cover of Vogue a few months later; that she collaborated with famous illustrators, photographers and artists and inspired them to create new works; and above all that she picked up the camera herself against the spirit of the times and became a leading photographer of seductive fashion photos as well as surreal experiments and penetrating war reports. What is less known is that Miller’s impressive oeuvre was mainly to be admired in magazines during her life. Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen is changing this with this publication. Curator Saskia van Kampen-Prein traced Miller’s work and life through the pages of popular lifestyle magazines such as Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar, but also surrealist avant-garde periodicals. Through these magazines, Miller helped shape the modern world and was in print all her life. IN DUTCH, ON REQUEST AVAILABLE IN ENGLISH!
