Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880–1938) and Emil Nolde (1867–1956) are important representatives of German Expressionism. Their work is known for its popping colors and spontaneous brushstrokes and motifs.

Kirchner and Nolde turned their backs on European society and the norms of bourgeois culture and sought inspiration from people, ways of life and objects from other parts of the world, mainly Africa and Oceania. Their works are viewed against the background of the historical and ideological context in which they originated – there appears to be a link with the invention of the concept of “race” and oppression from Europe. In this way less known, violent aspects of expressionism come to light. The fascination of Kirchner and Nolde for the “other” turns out to be part of a general world view.

This book contains many different types of works by Kirchner, Nolde and unknown artists from other parts of the world. It also contains special documentary material from that period. IN DUTCH!
