The Belgian sculptor Jozef Cantré (1890-1957) and his friends Gustave De Smet and Frits Van den Berghe, with whom he lived and worked in Het Gooi between 1918 and 1922, belonged to the core of what would become known as Flemish Expressionism.
With Frans Masereel, Henri Van Straten, Joris Minne and his brother Jan-Frans Cantré, later known as ‘De Vijf’, he brought modern Flemish engraving to an internationally renowned level.

This book highlights the life, art and artistic and literary networks, both in Belgium and the Netherlands, of a remarkable artist during the turbulent years surrounding the First World War and in the interwar period.
