As the driving force behind the international avant-garde, Belgian artist Jef Verheyen (1932–1984) occupies an important place in European art. In the late 1950s, painting reached a ‘zero point’ partly due to his vision.

Verheyen developed an inimitable monochrome painting technique by applying thin layers of paint on top of each other in an apparently steamed manner. The painting thus became a contemplative space: a window on the infinite that invites us to dream away, to stare into the void or – more conceptually – to focus our gaze.

Verheyen spent a lifetime trying to reconcile tradition with innovation. His modernist adventure included ceramic experiments and oriental ideas as well as painting by the Flemish masters. Jef Verheyen. Window on Infinity shows the substantive and stylistic evolution of Le Peintre Flamant, as he called himself, through hundreds of works. Thanks to never-before-released notebooks, photos and letters, this oeuvre overview also offers an insight into the artist’s archive. IN DUTCH!
