Antwerp’s favourite fashion photography and make-up duo, Ronald Stoops and Inge Grognard were instrumental in the international breakthrough of Belgian fashion. Collaborating with some of the country’s foremost designers and stylists, the pair made a vital contribution to the early careers of luminaries like Dries van Noten and Martin Margiela; their visceral visual language was then enthusiastically employed by second-wave stars like Raf Simons, Veronique Branquinho and Jurgi Persoons. This essential collection of thirty years of seminal European fashion imagery shows every facet of the duo’s aesthetic, from austere catwalk experimentalism to equally surprising moments of beauty and humour.

Ronald Stoops has been a fashion photographer for a very long time. He made a name for himself at the same time as the Antwerp Six+: Walter Van Beirendonck, Ann Demeulemeester, Dirk Bikkembergs, Dirk Van Saene, Dries Van Noten, Marina Yee and Martin Margiela. After that he has collaborated with countless artists, and for various projects. His partner, Inge Grognard, has worked as a makeup artist with the same names. Although what they do is very intertwined with the fashion world, they still found the time to develop and pursue parallel careers, focusing on their own free work. This book is the result of that. Their work surprises with its lively use of colour, the original settings and the play with identity. Faces are hidden behind paint masks, yet they retain their characteristic individuality, their special features. What’s more, what Stoops and Grognard do is add layers, highlight what’s worth seeing and what’s startling. Lost in thought, scared, confident, theatrical, dramatic, disciplined, futuristic, simple: it all applies to their models, and especially to the people they put in front of the lens and are captured in surrealistic stagings. The book offers an insight into the wonderful universe of this duo that breathes aesthetics. The compositions are intelligent, the make-up of overwhelming, intriguing beauty. In short, their images question reality, but always in style.
