André Breton’s Manifeste du Surréalisme was first published in 1924: exactly a century later, the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium celebrate the centenary of surrealism with the exhibition IMAGINE!
From Giorgio de Chirico to Jackson Pollock, Salvador Dalí, René Magritte, Joan Miró, Dorothea Tanning, Man Ray and Leonor Fini: IMAGINE! brings together big names from surrealism and explains the movement through themes such as the dream, the labyrinth, the subconscious and metamorphosis.
The exhibition also makes interesting connections: through more than 130 works of art (paintings, works on paper, sculptures, objects, assemblages and photographs), IMAGINE! the similarities and affinities, but also the fault lines between surrealism and one of its predecessors, symbolism. From 1880, Brussels was a hotspot for the arts and the avant-garde. Symbolism – represented by Rops, Spilliaert, Khnopff, Delville and Minne – developed there and anticipated the rise of the surrealist movement. A few decades later, the city became the focal point of Belgian surrealism.
The exhibition was produced in collaboration with the Center Pompidou (Paris) and will travel after Brussels and Paris to the Hamburger Kunsthalle, the Fundación Mapfre in Madrid and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. IN DUTCH, AVAILABLE IN ENGLISH OR FRENCH ON REQUEST
