With Plan Ooievaar, H + N + S Landscape Architects got off to a flying start more than thirty years ago. Since then, the office has played a leading role in Dutch landscape architecture. The designs often testify to a deeper insight and a broader perspective. Our relationship to nature and how we deal with water are important accents in this.
In the course of its thirty years of existence, the ‘think office’ has increasingly become a ‘making office’, across the full breadth of the profession. What remained is the combination of fundamental knowledge and inspiring curiosity. For example, the design for Maasvlakte 2 combines functionality and nature experience, a radical road relocation in Leuven offers space for the pleasant Park Belle-Vue, new dike shapes give an appropriate impulse to area development along the Maas, and housing is an asset allotment complex in Alkmaar.
In this special magazine – with the cooperation of Hans van der Meer and Siebe Swart – more than thirty completed projects have been recorded in text and image. Pages with an altar fold make you part of the landscape as a reader. Marieke Berkers interviewed the old and the new management about what drives them and Tijs van den Boomen wrote on the basis of round table discussions with clients, former employees, cooperation partners and observers about three decades of thinking, doing and not doing.
