The oeuvre of Dutch architect Hendrik Petrus Berlage (1856-1934) is a foundation of Dutch cultural heritage. Over time, his fame has only grown, and almost all of his buildings are listed as Monuments. Much has been written about his work, much less about his life, and little or little about the relationship between the two. Grandson Max van Rooy wrote an artist’s biography that is as true as possible about the socially committed person Berlage, his spirit, his character and his work. He traveled to Berlage on the basis of diary notes and travel sketches. His mother Miep Berlage (1906-1992), Berlage’s youngest daughter, shared a lot of unique information on a personal level.
‘Did I make that?’ focuses on the lesser-known younger years of Berlage, in which his ideas were formed – his childhood years in Amsterdam with his family, the surrounding buildings, his learning and traveling years in Switzerland, Germany and Italy, and his first projects, culminating in the construction of the monumental Stock Exchange in Amsterdam and his contact with the Kröller-Müller family.
