Govert Flinck was one of Rembrandt’s most talented pupils, but he was much more than that. After his apprenticeship, he quickly developed his own style with which he built up an excellent reputation among his contemporaries. This led to Flinck receiving the most prestigious commission of all painters in Amsterdam in the seventeenth century in 1659: the painted decorations for the galleries of the new Town Hall on Dam Square. His death four months later ensured that these decorations were never executed.
This book considers Flinck from the perspective of his contemporaries: his family, friends, his clients, his teachers, fellow artists and pupils, but also the poets who sang his life and work. By placing Flinck’s life and work in this context, the image of the artist and his oeuvre becomes more complete and meaningful.
