Gert Dumbar (b. 1940) is one of the most influential—and colorful—graphic designers in the post-war design field, both in the Netherlands and abroad. As a young partner at Tel Design, he designed well-known and iconic symbols in the Dutch public domain, such as the logo for the Dutch Railways, NS, to which he added numerous designs for other clients with his own Studio Dumbar. Admired or reviled—(Studio) Dumbar has left an indelible mark on Dutch and international visual culture.

Dumbar produced an enormous amount of work, for a varied clientele, from avant-garde theaters to the central government, from hospitals to multinationals. That work and the Werdegang of its namesake are now—for the first time and with great verve—described and interpreted by the two authors in a richly illustrated book.

Gert Dumbar, Gentleman Maverick of Dutch Design considers this wonderfully versatile oeuvre in its time and context, exploring the various roles Dumbar played—artist, provocateur and ‘design director’, student and teacher, cultural initiator and mediator. Unique is the wealth of sketches from the Studio’s archives, used in large numbers for the book. This title offers insight into Dumbar’s independent, flexible spirit, his gift for attracting talented young designers, and his ability to repeatedly seduce his very diverse contacts to venture off the beaten track.
