Francis Bacon (1909–1992) is widely regarded as one of the most important painters of the twentieth century. He was fascinated by animals, studied them all his life and owned an enormous collection of books and photographs about wildlife. By observing animal behavior, he sought to understand the true nature of humans and pointed out that we are not as far from the animal kingdom as we might like to believe.
This publication comes in response to a new exhibition on this intriguing aspect of Bacon’s work. Specialized authors explore the artist’s approach to the animal kingdom and identify his diverse sources of inspiration, including surrealist literature and photographs by Eadweard Muybridge.
