Expedition Egypt tells the story of two centuries of fascinating archaeological discoveries in the land of the pharaohs and the creation of the Egyptian collection of the Museum Kunst & History in Brussels. In the nineteenth century, Belgian diplomatic and industrial circles showed great interest in Egypt’s past, which then occupied an important place in international politics and the world economy. In the first decades of the twentieth century, the ambitious and flamboyant Egyptologist Jean Capart played an invaluable role in the expansion of the collection and the development of scientific research. Thanks to Capart’s numerous initiatives, Brussels was at one point even considered the world capital of Egyptology. This book accompanies the exhibition Expedition Egypt, which features more than two hundred objects from the famous Egyptian collection of the Museum Kunst & Bringing history together. The eye-catchers are the newly restored, richly decorated sarcophagi from the priestly cachet of Deir el-Bahari and the beautifully illustrated book of the dead of Neferrenpet. Objects such as funerary stelae, canopic vases for the entrails of the deceased and shabti figurines that accompanied the dead in the afterlife guide visitors through the Egyptian world of the gods and eternal life.
