a+u 17:11 was planned and edited as a companion to the previous issue, “American Architecture: 1945 -1970”. The American issue explored the beginnings of modernism in the US. It was centered on the theme of industrialization and the concept of universal architecture that could be valid anywhere in the world. However, this issue on Europe, entitled, “Synthesis of Modernism and Context”, features works chosen to highlight the synthesis between modernism and various types of architectural context, such as place, history, and natural materials. It tries to avoid bias toward well-known works, instead, devoting space to important works that deserve more attention than they have commonly received. In particular, there is an outstanding legacy of built work from this period in Scandinavia and Italy. This issue introduces these and other works, many of them newly photographed, chronologically, and by region.
