At first glance, Belgian artists James Ensor (1860-1949) and Roger Raveel (1921-2013), as well as their work, seem completely different from each other. Not only do the two Belgian painters belong to a different generation, they also distinguish themselves by their origin and environment. But on closer inspection, we can discover common features. What typifies both is their attachment to their native soil. Just as Ensor could not leave Ostend, so Raveel remained loyal to Machelen throughout his life. Both painters are characterized as strong personalities and were seen as Einzelgänger from an early age. James Ensor has similarities with impressionism, symbolism and expressionism, but ultimately transcends the known art movements, as does Roger Raveel who, with his renewed and fresh view of reality – which art criticism would later call the ‘New Vision’ – opposed the common pictorial norms after the Second World War. Thanks to the power of their imagination, the mere representation of reality is transcended. IN DUTCH AND FRENCH!
