The Flemish masters. Van Eyck tot Bruegel spanned almost a century and a half of painting, from around 1430 until the death of Pieter Bruegel the Elder in 1569. During that period, painting in the Netherlands flourished to an unprecedented degree. This lavishly illustrated book offers a representative overview of the most important and influential painters of that period and of all painting genres that developed or were renewed in this region.

The author goes in search of what made these paintings so new and special. By describing them both per generation and thematically, insights arise about the different styles, formats, functions and genres, and the artistic and social context in which they originated. These painters certainly knew each other’s works well. They often took something from each other and then did something new with it. Artistic cross-fertilization was fundamental.
