The influence of Dutch landscape architect Mien Ruys (1904-1999) on garden and landscape architecture cannot be underestimated. She managed to impressively capture the spirit of the times in her many garden designs and was one of the first women to make a name for herself as a landscape architect. She also shared her knowledge to get as many people as possible into gardening. The gardens in Dedemsvaart were her testing grounds throughout her life, where she tried out and refined numerous ideas. She created her first experiment, the Naturalization Garden, in 1924 and that was just the beginning.
The garden is a process shows the development of Mien Ruys’ life’s work. Supplemented with beautiful photos, historical images, garden designs and planting plans, this book is relevant for garden and landscape architects as well as gardeners of all levels.
Conny den Hollander is a garden and landscape designer, head gardener of the Mien Ruys Gardens and writes for Onze Eigen Tuin. She works every day in the thirty testing grounds in Dedemsvaart and knows better than anyone how innovative and useful Mien Ruys’ designs still are, now and with a view to the future. IN DUTCH!
