Although the work of Constant Permeke (1886–1952) is usually considered expressionism, the artist explored a multitude of registers. From the start of his career, he received wide international recognition with recurring subjects such as domestic scenes and people in their everyday actions. His landscapes and seascapes radiate a tranquil, sometimes sublime warmth.
For Permeke, art and life were closely linked. His oeuvre vibrates with lively, raw energy, but also exudes melancholy. He combined the technique of painting – with powerful brush strokes, strokes, smudges, scratches and stains – with drawing and outlining. Completely in line with modernism, he sought how he could break through academicism and how he could continually reinvent painting.
This collection book is beautifully illustrated with dozens of paintings, sculptures and drawings. The many archive photos offer an in-depth look at the master’s life and work. IN DUTCH! AVAILABLE ON REQUEST IN FRENCH OR ENGLISH
