Belgian architect Christan Kieckens (1951-2020) can be regarded as one of the founders of narrative architecture in Flanders. As a professor at the University of Antwerp, he inspired entire generations of architects, passionately using his knowledge and international network to anchor an architectural culture in Flanders and Belgium based on social responsibility, based on a desire for universal and fundamental beauty tout court. From Borromini to Arvo Pärt, from Lina Bo Bardi to David Bowie, his love for art, literature and pop culture mixed with an in-depth knowledge of all aspects of architecture and its history. As a mentor, he passed on so many keys to the craft and language of architecture, elements that he incorporated into his multi-layered oeuvre, from buildings to furniture, exhibitions and books. Searching-Thinkinging-Building was the title of his 2001 architectural monograph.
