One of the features that distinguishes the work of Belgian architect Charles Vandenhove (1927-2019) lies in the unique relationship he maintains with the world of art. Since the mid-1960s, he has invited around thirty major artists to produce works in his projects. But this number increases even more if we count those who appear in his considerable personal collection. Going beyond certain theories of ‘artistic integration’ intensely practiced in the 1960s and 1970s, Vandenhove has renewed the old art-architecture dialectic in a completely original way – and undoubtedly unique in contemporary architecture.
