Il Libro dell’Arte is regarded within the art and restoration world as the absolute standard work in the field of old painting techniques. It is the best preserved medieval treatise on art and is mentioned in just about all studies on painting and restoration technique.
Little is known about Cennino d’Andrea Cennini (1360?–1427?). He is said to have been born about 1360 in Colle di Val d’Elsa, a town in the province of Siena. Cennino learned the basics of the craft from his father Andrea and then moved to Agnolo Gaddi’s workshop in Florence, where he stayed for ten years. From 1388 we find him back in the performance of the Saint Stephen series in the Saint Lucchese church near Poggibonsi. He then settles in Padua where he writes his famous book.
Three manuscripts of Il Libro dell’Arte have survived. This Dutch translation is based on the oldest and most original version: a copy from 1437 that was copied by a prisoner in the Florentine Carcere delle Stinche.
Il Libro dell’Arte is not only interesting because of the clear way in which the painting techniques are explained, but also because of the zeitgeist that appears in the work. Cennino’s refined nuances and his thorough professional knowledge make this book a unique document that offers much to enjoy for contemporary painters and restorers as well as for the art lover.
