“It is not the outward form of things that is real, but the essence of things.” This was the starting point for the Romanian-born artist Brancusi. He broke with the modeling technique and switched to the taille directe (direct form) of the block of stone or wood. After his training, Constantin Brancusi (1876-1957) traveled through Europe on foot. He eventually settled in Paris. Auguste Rodin noticed his great talent and took him on as an assistant. But Brancusi soon decided to distance himself from the master of sculpture and went his own way. He invented a new visual language, with a focus on simple forms.
