The book Artemisia Gentileschi (1593-circa 1654) is celebrated as the first female painter in the history of art. Trained by her father in Rome, admitted to the Florence Academy of Drawing, and benefiting from ever-increasing commissions, she was the first artist to earn a living from her work. Defying the customary practice of portraiture for women, she executed remarkable history paintings, including the striking Judith of Capitant Holofernes, inspired by Caravaggio.
Beyond a personal history punctuated by tragedies, this monograph presents her in activity alongside her patrons, within the artistic circles surrounding her, and in her successive places of residence, from Rome to Naples, via Florence, Venice, and London. It presents all of the artist’s paintings authenticated to date (including recently The Triumph of Galatea, David and Goliath, Lucre), restored works and previously unpublished works including Roman Charity.
