Engaging Architecture explores the way in which the trades and tools of architecture – and, more broadly, architectural culture – are being implemented to meet the social and environmental challenges facing Wallonia and Brussels – and, beyond that, Western Europe. How can architects engage? How can we redefine hegemonic narratives? How can we build community through space? How can we address housing challenges? How can we view the existing built environment as a resource and reconsider the relationship between ethics and aesthetics?

Through six essays, a photo-essay and the analysis of 37 emblematic projects that are as relevant as they are inspiring, this volume explores these questions in concrete terms. It highlights a selection of 140 practices that question, experiment with and transform our built and unbuilt environment. Between ethics, resilience and ingenuity, these approaches bear witness to architecture in action that is focused on new ways of inhabiting and designing the territory.

Every three years, Wallonia-Brussels Architecture Inventories # provides an overview of architectural production in Wallonia and Brussels. It bears witness to the engagement of public and private stakeholders in the pursuit of architecture that is attuned to the times and that contributes to improving our living environment.
