Massimo Pica Ciamarra (b. 1937) was a professor of architecture at the University of Naples. He is also an architect in Naples, where he heads a large architectural firm: the Pica Ciamarra Associat
Architecture critic Klaus Koenig situates Pica Ciamarra as an epigone of the enfants terribles, Giancarlo De Carlo and Team X, and sees him as a spoilsport in the Italian ‘postmodern’ debate. ‘Postmoderns’ such as Aldo Rossi and Portoghesi, according to Koenig, have moved from the ‘modern’ certainties of the past to the certainties of today. What Giancarlo De Carlo greatly appreciates in Pica Ciamarra is his flexible architectural language based on the definitive destruction of style or other codes. An architectural language that continually renews itself starting from a given project, a given site.
