Crumpled or smoothed, white, pink or blue, opaque envelopes of an orange sphere, citrus papers have almost become objects of the past, a rare commodity that can only be found on the shelves of luxury grocery stores. When they were invented, at the end of the 19th century, these papers were intended for oranges only, the only citrus fruit that must be picked ripe and whose transport is therefore delicate. Then came the graphic design, with the development of printing techniques. And because they are very popular with consumers, we also started to wrap lemons, mandarins and grapefruits.
Happy legatee of two collections of citrus papers, mudac (musée cantonal de design et d’arts appliqués contemporains, Lausanne) demonstrated the originality of the graphic tricks imagined by the anonymous creators of these papers.
