Keith Haring: Luna Luna, A Poetic Extravaganza (pop-up)

Luna Luna, 1986

Pop-up featuring a 3D carousel with Keith Haring’s iconic figures. This was the only such object which he made during his career and it was no doubt in memory of his hero, Warhol, who had made his famous “Index Book” 20 years earlier. The edition size of the sculpture was 2000 copies. Most of these were destroyed immediately after the Fair in an accident. The total number of copies available is said to be nearly 100-200 pieces.

Luna Luna was an open-air museum and amusement park in Hamburg, Germany from June 4 to August 31, 1987. Curated by Austrian artist André Heller, it was an attempt to ‘create a travelling terrain of modern art, than in centuries-old principal of the fairground’. Heller commissioned various artists to design attractions for this event. The participating artists included Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, Roy Lichtenstein, Salvador Dalí, David Hockney, Kenny Scharf, Roland Toper, Jean Tiguely, and Sonia Delaunay. The original Luna Luna works are being restored and new works being commissioned for a global tour funded by DreamCrew, the production firm owned by rapper Drake.

Our copy is still folded, as originally.
