Karin Alfredsson was born in 1966 in Jämtland, northern Sweden, and grew up on the island of Frösön. Alfredsson can spend long periods in roadless countryside that she travels to on skis or on foot. There she takes time to get to know the place and await the right conditions for her pictures.
“Snow and Rain Shall Pass” is a series of photographs taken in the northernmost regions of Scandinavia between the years 2016-2024. The title is simultaneously poetic and factual like a weather report. This description also fits Alfredsson’s images. Her photographs of mountain landscapes, forests, and water depict a barren and magnificent nature, strongly threatened by climate change. Forests, mountains, and waterways – nature that still appears as it did hundreds, perhaps thousands of years ago.
Alfredsson’s images can inspire reflection and humility in the viewer. The photographs appear timeless, but the awareness that the landscapes Karin Alfredsson captures may soon disappear gives a mournful undertone to their stark beauty. At first glance, they seem almost black and white, but upon closer inspection, pale colors emerge, much like in snow and gray weather.
Featuring 45 photographs by Karin Alfredsson, the book also includes two poems by Nobel laureate Jon Fosse. In his poetry, we encounter images of forests, mountains, lakes, darkness, and light, against which the insignificance and vulnerability of humanity emerge. Alfredsson and Fosse have found resonance in each other’s artistic expressions and selected the poems together.
