The architect and architectural German theorist Hugo Häring (1882-1958) is one of the great functionalists of the 20th century. He introduced his concept of ‘organic building’ into the architectural debate from Berlin in the 1920s. As secretary of the architects’ association ‘Der Ring’, which he helped to found in 1923/24, he was one of the central figures of the German architectural avant-garde of the Weimar interwar period. In his designs, he pursued the goal of developing buildings primarily in accordance with the individual needs of their use. He did apply formal principles from industrial production or the classical tradition of architecture where he felt it necessary. However, these were to be incorporated into the overall idea of ’organic building’, which respects the status of the individual. Häring’s position, including his reflection on the social role and responsibility of the architect, is still relevant and particularly relevant in the current crises.
